Owls Head Lighthouse
Owls Head Lighthouse is one of Maine’s most beloved coastal landmarks, perched dramatically atop an 80‑foot bluff overlooking Penobscot Bay near Rockland Harbor. It has served as an active aid to navigation since 1825, guiding ships into one of Maine’s busiest historic harbors.
The lighthouse is part of Owls Head State Park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.
Portland Head Light
Portland Head Light is Maine’s most iconic lighthouse and one of the most photographed coastal landmarks in the United States. Standing on a rugged headland in Cape Elizabeth, it marks the entrance to Portland Harbor and has guided mariners since 1791, making it the oldest lighthouse in Maine and the first lighthouse built by the U.S. government.
Built under the direction of George Washington, the original tower was constructed from local fieldstone and rubble, later lined with brick and raised to improve visibility. Today, the lighthouse features a conical white tower with black trim, rising 80 feet above the ground with a focal height of 101 feet above sea level.
